The youngest of six talented sisters, Elyse d’Abreau was destined for stardom—until a boating accident took everything from her. Now, the most beautiful singer in Tobago can’t sing. She can’t even speak.
Seeking quiet solitude, Elyse accepts a friend’s invitation to Atargatis Cove. Named for the mythical first mermaid, the Oregon seaside town is everything Elyse’s home in the Caribbean isn’t: An ocean too cold for swimming, parties too tame for singing, and people too polite to pry—except for one.
Christian Kane is a notorious playboy—insolent, arrogant, and completely charming. He’s also the only person in Atargatis Cove who doesn’t treat Elyse like a glass statue. He challenges her to express herself, and he admires the way she treats his younger brother Sebastian, who believes Elyse is the legendary mermaid come to life.
When Christian needs a first mate for the Cove’s high-stakes Pirate Regatta, Elyse reluctantly stows her fear of the sea and climbs aboard. The ocean isn’t the only thing making waves, though—swept up in Christian’s seductive tide and entranced by the Cove’s charms, Elyse begins to wonder if a life of solitude isn’t what she needs. But changing course again means facing her past. It means finding her inner voice. And scariest of all, it means opening her heart to a boy who’s best known for breaking them . . .

***I received an e-galley of this book from the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review***

I really liked reading The Summer of Chasing Mermaids! This was my first Sarah Ockler book and I really love her beautiful writing style. I am looking forward to checking out some of her other books.
I was really excited when I heard that it is an adaptation of The Little Mermaid. (Which I am only familiar with the Disney movie version...) I did enjoy the small details and similarities.

Elyse was on track to become a star singer with her twin sister, until an accident changed everything. Elyse can't sing or speak and she now has to figure out how to accept what has happened. She decides it is best to leave Tobago for the summer and live with some close family friends in a small seaside town in Oregon. There Elyse meets Christian. Christian has a bit of a reputation for being a playboy, but, he is intrigued by Elyse. They spend the summer hanging out and fixing up his boat to race in the Pirate Regatta. This summer was supposed to be Elyse's chance to start over, but she finds that first she must face her past and concur her fears.

At first the story moved a little slowly, but it did keep my attention and kept me interested in what was happening to the characters. The writing is beautiful! It was easy for me to picture in my head and there are several lines from the story that really made me feel. Definitely felt moved by the words. The more I read, the more I wanted to keep reading! And the romance was pretty cute and swoony.

I absolutely loved the characters! I think that they are all well developed. I love the relationship/friendship developments and the interactions between these characters. It was so easy for me to care about them all!

Elyse has seriously been through so much. Her entire life changed after the accident that took her voice. She has so much to work through and come to terms with. I really found her enchanting. I love that she has found another way to express herself through poetry. I especially love the strength that she finds within herself. I also enjoyed learning a bit about Eylse's culture and her life in Tobago.
I also really liked Elyse's friendships with Kirby and Vanessa. These two girls really care about Eylse and trying to make her feel welcome. It was easy for me to get the feeling that both of them would be there for her. I loved how they helped her come out of her shell a little bit. I really enjoyed them hanging out.

Christian is a very charming guy. And I think that he is a nice guy. He really cares about his little brother, Sebastian, as well as, his friends. He has a rough relationship with his father (lots of tension there) and all the pressure that comes with it. I really liked the interactions between him and Elyse. I think they got along really well.

Sebastian is just SO ADORABLE! I loved the scenes that he was in. I loved the sibling bond between him and Christian. And I loved the friendship that he formed with Elyse. I think Sebastian is a very unique character. He struggles with so much, but he still has faith that there are mermaids out there. He has a lot of determination. I really enjoyed the scenes where Christian, Elyse, and Sebastian all were hanging out. It was so easy for me to see how much love there is between these three characters and how much Sebastian means to them and vice versa.

My Recommendation:

I really enjoyed reading The Summer of Chasing Mermaids. I was moved by the writing and the characters. The story is entertaining and interesting. I definitely recommend giving this one a read.
