Last summer, Lucy’s and Ben’s lives changed in an instant. One moment, they were shyly flirting on a lake raft, finally about to admit their feelings to each other after years of yearning. In the next, Trixie—Lucy’s best friend and Ben’s sister—was gone, her heart giving out during a routine swim. And just like that, the idyllic world they knew turned upside down, and the would-be couple drifted apart, swallowed up by their grief. Now it’s a year later in their small lake town, and as the anniversary of Trixie’s death looms, Lucy and Ben’s undeniable connection pulls them back together. They can’t change what happened the day they lost Trixie, but the summer might finally bring them closer to healing—and to each other.

I was very excited to read this book. The Last Thing You Said was one of my top ten 2017 Debut Author releases. The cover and title instantly drew me into needing to know more about the book and once I read the synopsis, I knew it was one that I wanted to read.

I ended up reading The Last Thing You Said in one evening. I was hooked to the story and didn't want to put it down.

The Last Thing You Said  is about Lucy and Ben. Lucy is the best friend of Ben's sister, Trixie. Lucy and Ben were finally about to admit their feelings to one another, until one summer day, Trixie, was gone. After Trixie's death, Lucy and Ben drifted apart. They didn't admit their feelings and get together, and they ended up not really being friends anymore either. This book begins at the start of summer, right before the one year anniversary of Trixie's passing. The summer job that Lucy takes brings her back to being around Ben. I think The Last Thing You Said is a heartbreaking but bittersweet story. This book has friendship, romance, grief, pain, and a bit of hope. I quite enjoyed reading it.

There are several things that I really liked and loved about this story.

I loved the relationship between Lucy and Emily. Emily is Trixie's cousin and Lucy watches her. And while Lucy watches her she shares stories about Trixie. I love these stories. I love how connected to Trixie it makes the characters and the readers feel. Plus, I think Lucy and Emily's friendship is cute.

Another thing that I loved about The Last Thing You Said is that even though Trixie is gone, she is still such a big part of the story. It was so easy for me to get to know Trixie as a character, to like her and care about her, and to also deal with the heartbreak that this character had passed away. Just reading the story made me said for the characters and the heartbreak of losing someone you loved.

I really liked the dual points of view, Lucy and Ben. They both are dealing with the same loss but in different ways. So it is good to see things from both of their points of view, to get to know them better as characters. As well as, to see how they are each dealing with their pain and grief about losing Trixie.

Overall, I liked Lucy and Ben, individually and as romantic interests. But I didn't always like how they acted or the things they did. I feel like they made some bad decisions. But it felt realistic. I know that people tend to make bad decisions or act out even when they are not dealing with grief. So even though I didn't like some of the things these characters did, it didn't keep me from enjoying the book.

My Recommendation:

I really enjoyed reading The Last Thing You Said. I read it in one evening and couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen in the end. I enjoyed the relationships and interactions. I liked the characters. I enjoyed the story line. This story made me have so many feelings and even made me tear up. I think it is a good debut novel and I am looking forward to reading other books Sara Biren writes. I recommend checking The Last Thing You Said
