Orphaned and alone, Jasminda lives in a land where cold whispers of invasion and war linger on the wind. Jasminda herself is an outcast in her homeland of Elsira, where her gift of Earthsong is feared. When ruthless soldiers seek refuge in her isolated cabin, they bring with them a captive--an injured spy who threatens to steal her heart.
Jack's mission behind enemy lines to prove that the Mantle between Elsira and Lagamiri is about to fall nearly cost him his life, but he is saved by the healing Song of a mysterious young woman. Now he must do whatever it takes to save Elsira and it's people from the True Father and he needs Jasminda's Earthsong to do it. They escape their ruthless captors and together they embark on a perilous journey to save Elsira and to uncover the secrets of The Queen Who Sleeps.
Thrust into a hostile society, Jasminda and Jack must rely on one another even as secrets jeopardize their bond. As an ancient evil gains power, Jasminda races to unlock a mystery that promises salvation.
The fates of two nations hang in the balance as Jasminda and Jack must choose between love and duty to fulfill their destinies and end the war.

***I received an e-galley of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review***

I wanted to read Song of Blood & Stone because the synopsis grabbed my attention and it sounded like it would be a very unique and fascinating read. I did find the story to be unique, it has a fascinating premise and I really liked a good majority of the story. But I was hoping to be completely pulled into the world and fall in love with the characters and plot from the start. But sadly, that just didn't happen for me. I had a hard time connecting with the story at first. Honestly, at the beginning I was trying to figure out what was going on and make sense of the world building. But as the story continued, things became clearer for me. I did become invested in the characters and it was easier for me to stay pulled into the story the more I read. I didn't fall in love with Song of Blood & Stone, but I did like it and I am really glad that I had the chance to read it.

Song of Blood & Stone is interesting and complex. This story has romance, tension, and danger. The power of the Song is fascinating.

The world in Song of Blood & Stone is divided into two territories and two rulers separated by the Mantle, a magical barrier. The Queen Who Sleeps is the ruler of Elsira. Elsira is mostly inhabited by Silents, people who do not have Earthsong. They are all fair skinned with light hair. The True Father is the ruthless ruler of Lagamiri. Lagamiri is inhabited by Earthsingers, those with the gift of Song. They are all dark skinned with dark hair. The main character of this story is Jasminda, she is the daughter of a Silent and a Earthsinger and she has the gift of Earthsong. She lives in Elsira, which makes her feared by others because of her Song and skin color. Jasminda meets Jack in the beginning of the story and saves his life. This leads them on a quest to save Elsira.

There are several things that I really liked about this story. But there are also a couple things that kept me from completely loving it.

I really liked Jasminda's character. I think she is an excellent main character for this story and well written. She has experienced pain and heartbreak from losing her family. It was easy to care about the character and feel connected to her. She is treated like an outsider because she is half Elsira and half Lagamiri and she has the Earthsong power. She lives in Elsira but looks more like her Lagamiri heritage, which results in others not treating her nicely or equally. I really liked that she wasn't amazing at everything she did. She has doubts and struggles, which makes her human. She has anger and sadness. She is full of determination, strong will and bravery. She will stand up for what she wants and to protect others. She is my favorite character from this story.

I also liked Jack. He has a bit of mystery surrounding him for the beginning of the story. He also has determination and tries to do whatever he can to protect others. He is brave.

Song of Blood & Stone is a fantasy romance story. So there is quite a bit of romance in this book. While I liked the romance between Jasminda and Jack, I didn't love it. I wanted to feel the heart-warming, swoony love between them. I wanted them to be together, but I just didn't feel the spark between them. There were moments that made me smile between them, but overall I was hoping for a bit more chemistry between them. Overall, I still liked and enjoyed the romance.

I really liked the visions Jasminda had and the Earthsong power. I liked the vision chapters of the story, I feeel that it gives a lot of insight into Earthsong and how things came to be. I really like how it ties into the entire story. I really found the Earthsong power to be quite fascinating. It was interesting in how people used their Song. I really enjoyed finding out more about it.

There wasn't really any shocking plot twists or surprises, but I think it was supposed to be that way. There isn't really a cliffhanger but I will say that the Epilogue did surprise me and has left me wondering what will happen next.

My Recommendation:

I am glad that I had the chance to read Song of Blood & Stone. It took me a little while to get pulled into the story, but I once I did it didn't take long for me to read it. I really liked the characters and the world. I recommend giving this one a read if you like reading fantasy romance books. Also, just be aware that this story does contain a graphic attempted rape near the beginning of the story. Overall, I did enjoy reading Song of Blood & Stone. I didn't fall in love with it, but I did like it.
