Beautiful Creatures meets The Raven Boys in the spellbinding second novel in the Heirs of Watson Island trilogy that “skillfully blends rich magic and folklore with adventure, sweeping romance, and hidden treasure” (Publishers Weekly, on Compulsion).
Grieving the death of her godfather and haunted by her cousin Cassie’s betrayal, Barrie returns from a trip to San Francisco to find the Watson plantation under siege. Ghost-hunters hope to glimpse the ancient spirit who sets the river on fire each night, and reporters chase rumors of a stolen shipment of Civil War gold that may be hidden at Colesworth Place. The chaos turns dangerous as Cassie hires a team of archeologists to excavate beneath the mansion ruins. Because more is buried there than treasure.
A stranger filled with magic arrives at Watson’s Landing claiming that the key to the Watson and Beaufort gifts—and the Colesworth curse—also lies beneath the mansion. With a mix of threats and promises, the man convinces Barrie and Cassie to cast a spell there at midnight. But what he conjures may have deadly consequences.
While Barrie struggles to make sense of the escalating peril and her growing and forbidden feelings for Eight Beaufort, it’s impossible to know whom to trust and what to fight for—Eight or herself. Millions of dollars and the fate of the founding families is at stake. Now Barrie must choose between what she feels deep in her heart and what will keep Watson’s Landing safe in this stunning addition to a series filled with “decadent settings, mysterious magic, and family histories rife with debauchery” (Kirkus Reviews, on Compulsion).

***I received an e-galley of this book from the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review***
I really loved reading Compulsion last year, so I was super excited for the chance to read Persuasion! I was really fortunate and lucky to be one of the beta readers for Persuasion (from the Heirs of Watson Island Street Team). I am also very thankful for getting the chance to also read the e-galley version of Persuasion. I really enjoyed reading this sequel. Persuasion is beautifully written full of mystery, magic, love, and family. It is a great continuation and I can't wait to see what happens next.
Barrie is back at Watson Island and she is not only coping with the loss and grief of her godfather, she is still trying to work through the events that happened at the end of Compulsion. Cassie's betrayal is still fresh for Barrie and Eight. Because of the events, Ghost Hunters and reporters are surrounding the river, hoping to get a glimpse at the story (and the Fire Carrier). Which leads to Cassie hiring an archaeological team to search under the mansion ruins at Colesworth Place. A mysterious person comes to Watson Island claiming to know important information about the Watson and Beaufort gifts and the Colesworth curse. Which persuades Barrie into helping him with a spell. Will Barrie be able to figure out more about the gifts and the curse? Or will the consequences be too dangerous?
I really enjoyed the mystery in Persuasion! It kept me on my toes because there is a lot of build up and suspense with the mystery. I wasn't sure what was going to happen. I also found the lore fascinating. So many emotions. It was heartbreaking and well written.
I especially loved the one of the new characters, Obadiah. He is the perfect combination of mysterious and a bit creepy. He is just so intriguing and I couldn't help but want to know more about him and what he was going to do next.
Barrie was a little bit more frustrating in this book, but her actions and decisions come from her heart. She honestly believes she is doing what is best for those she cares about. I might not agree with some of her decisions, but I understand why she does them. She cares so much for those she loves and will do anything she can to protect them. Her relationship with Eight faces challenges and though I was sad about them having these issues, it also is realistic. Relationships aren't always kissing and happiness, and I was interested to see how they would work through these challenges. But yes, I was a bit frustrated with the secrets and tension, I really do like the happiness and kisses. So hopefully they will be able to work through things. Eight is still awesome. I really like his character. I enjoyed his family dynamic in this book. He is just so sweet and really wants to protect Barrie.
I still love the relationship building between Barrie and Pru. Their relationship is so enduring and I love the bond they are building. I also liked the interactions between Barrie and Cassie. There is so much between them: the secrets, betrayal, fighting, and tension. Though I feel like we also got to see a different side to their relationship during this book and I am curious to see how things will be between them in book three.
