Thursday Thoughts #5: Book Hype

This weeks topic:
May 29: Book Hype - If a book is over-hyped does it make you want to read it more, less, or does it not effect you whatsoever? Do you think book-hype helps or hurts new releases? Do you think book-hype can sometimes skew or taint people's opinions on a book? What was the most recent over-hyped up book you can recall?

I feel that it depends on the book. The first one that comes to my mind is The Winner's Curse by Marie Rutkoski.

I first saw this book all over Twitter. So many book bloggers taking about it. And I felt that there was a lot of excitement and hype over this book on Twitter and GoodReads.

In this instance, the book-hype just made me want to read the book even more. I was a little worried that I might be too excited for the book and that it wouldn't live up to what I was expecting. But it did. (At least for me.) I adore this book, I loved reading it and it is one that I will re-read in the future. And I am really looking forward to reading the next one and other books that Marie Rutoski writes.

Another book that I think has been getting a lot of hype recently is We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
I am interested in reading this book. I have seen that some bloggers have loved it and some haven't. But I haven't had the chance to read it yet and I am not sure when I will get the chance. But I am hoping that I will like it.

Fifty Shades of Grey is another book that I think had/has a lot of book hype. I haven't read it and I don't really plan to.

So for me, I think that if there is a lot of book-hype, it would depend on the book itself for me to want to read it more, less, or not effect it. If the book is surrounded by a lot of hype and it is a book that sounds interesting to me, then I will probably want to read it more. If it is a book that I am not sure about, and it gets a lot of hype, then it will probably also make me want to read it more.

I do think the hype helps the books sell. I might be wrong, but as long as the book-hype is good, then I think people might become more interested in the book, which would help book sales.

What do you think? What are some other book-hypes that you know about? Did it effect your liking/disliking and opinion about that book?

  1. Definitely think 50 Shades hype was undeserved tbh, it's just Twilight fanfiction and it's not very well written. I have The Winner's Curse but still need to get to it. I have read We Were Liars and I absolutely loved it, definitely worthy of all the hype. Here's my post, my answer is at the bottom of post :).

  2. To me, the 50 Shades hype is almost a different ball-game entirely. I did read the first book in that series and I wasn't disappointed by any means. However, I think that in that instance, the hype was more because of the controversy surrounding the book's topic rather than the actual quality of the story and writing.

I also mentioned The Winner's Curse in my post! And, as for We Were Liars, I DEFINITELY plan on reading it. Probably this month. It's so odd because the hype around that book is very ominous. Like, for example, most BookTubers who are talking about it aren't giving really any synopsis. And, I love that! I don't even know very much what the book is about, and yet I'm dying to get my hands on it.

Thanks for participating in Thursday Thoughts, Stephanie! I loved hearing your opinions! :)

    1. I haven't watched any BookTubers...I am going to have to look that up because I have been hearing about it but all I know is that it must be book lovers on youtube. I also don't really know what the book is really about, yet with all the positive reports about it I am also really wanting to read it!
      Thanks, Ashley!

  3. I really didn't plan to read the 50 shades series till I found the 3 books for 3$ at the library book store in perfect condition :p So now, here they are on my bookshelf but I still can't make myself read them. Too much hype around it, I already know too much about these books :(

    1. Yeah, I definitely agree. I have had a lot of people recommend the books to me, but I don't think I will like them. And I would probably only try if I found the book at a library sale or check it out from the library...yet I haven't done either of those.
