***I received an ARC of this book from the NOVL Newsletter in exchange for an honest review***
I enjoyed reading Scarlett Undercover. It is a very quick read and was very easy for me to become interested in. Scarlett Undercover has an awesome heroine and an unique mystery. This story has secrets, action, and more than one mystery to solve.
Scarlett is not a typical teenage girl, she is a private detective. When a little girl comes asking for Scarlett's help to figure out why her older brother is acting weird, Scarlett agrees to take on the case. But this case is more than just trying to find out why the older brother is acting strange. Scarlett catches the attention of an ancient cult. While looking for clues, Scarlett discovers that her family secrets are tangled up with whatever is going on with the case. If she figures out what is really going on, she just might also find out who murdered her father.
Scarlett Undercover really is an entertaining story. I really found all the mystery and information about the genies and ancient curses to be interesting. I also found this part of the story to be unique because I haven't read anything quite like it. Not only was this an interesting mystery, there were several parts of the story that made me smile and laugh.
For the most part, I didn't really know what was going to happen next. I was intrigued by the mystery and wanting to know what was going to happen. There were a few twists that caught me by surprise. But unfortunately, the big twist at the end didn't surprise me. I was happy to be correct with my suspicions though.
But my favorite thing about this book is Scarlett! I love Scarlett. She is an excellent main character! She is funny and original. It is very easy to care about what will happen to her. I love that she is smart and snarky. She stands up for what she wants and she knows how to defend herself. She wants to do things herself and isn't interested in having someone else swoop in an save her. She is loyal, caring, and really wants to help others. I really like her relationship with her sister. I definitely agree with the synopsis Scarlett is "a character to remember"!
My Recommendation:
I enjoyed reading Scarlett Undercover. I think it is a good debut novel. Full of mystery, action, and secrets. I might not have been completely surprised by the mystery, but it was an entertaining read. I enjoyed solving the mystery with Scarlett. So I recommend giving this book a read, especially if you enjoy face-paced, unique mysteries. And it did remind me of Veronica Mars, which is awesome.
My Rating:
I agree- I really loved Scarlett as a character too. I've never seen Veronica Mars, but I think if her snark and her smarts match up I really need to find the show!
