***I received an e-galley of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review***

There were things that I enjoyed about this book, but also a few things that I found to be just okay.

Overall, I liked reading the story and found there to be bits of mystery, action, and a lot of family drama.

Avery's family is wealthy and under the microscope. So after disobeying her grandmother, Avery is sent to a boarding school. She hates being there and has been trying to find a way to escape. But luckily for Avery, something is happening and she is taken away from the boarding school to a big important family meeting. Where she learns that there is a chance for her to get what she wants. The VanDemere family must all compete to see which one of them will be the last one left standing and win the family inheritance

I found the story to be interesting. I was fascinated by the competitions and the world traveling. I liked the riddles and the clues. The mystery that made up the family quests. There is a lot of family history in this book. And some of the history was interesting.

But everything else was pretty much just okay for me.

I didn't really connect with the majority of the characters.

Avery is a fine character. I liked that she really seemed to want to do whatever she could to achieve her goal. There were moments where I did feel for her and for the personal challenges that she was facing. And overall, I did wonder how everything would end up for her.
I wasn't completely invested in the romantic relationship. There were times that I found it cute, but then other moments where it felt like it was just there. But I was interested in the development between Avery and her half-brother, Warren. As well as, what she would find out about her mother.
Riley is an okay character as well. He is smart and dedicated to his family. And he seems nice.
Most of Avery's family were quite mean and horrible. I kept getting the Uncles confused and couldn't remember which children belong to which Uncle. There was a lot of family drama and fighting, which at times could be entertaining.

My Recommendation:
Overall, I was entertained by the story and the challenges themselves. It was a pretty quick and easy read for me. Though some things were easy for me to figure out. If you like an interesting story with some mystery and a lot of family drama, then you might enjoy reading this book.

My Rating:

  1. I thought I've seen this book before. I have no idea it's a new book! No wonder I can't find it anywhere at the bookstore. Based on your review, this book sounds not that wonderful than I've thought. But, I will not be deterred, I'll give this book a fair chance. Hope it won't disappoint. :)
